What is Phototherapy?
Phototherapy, also known as light therapy, is a clinically proven treatment that uses controlled ultraviolet (UV) light to manage various skin conditions. It helps reduce inflammation, slow down abnormal skin cell growth, and improve skin appearance.
What are the Conditions Treated with Phototherapy?
Psoriasis – Reduces scaling, inflammation, and itching.
Vitiligo –Decreases the inflammation & Stimulates melanocytes to restore skin pigmentation.
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) – Relieves itching and inflammation.
Chronic Urticaria & Itchy Skin Disorders – Reduces histamine response.
What are the types of Phototherapy?
UVB Phototherapy
Broadband UVB: Covers a wide range of UVB light (290-320 nm). It’s less commonly used now due to side effects like sunburn-like reactions.
Narrowband UVB:
Emits a more specific wavelength (311-313 nm), which is more effective and has fewer side effects. It’s the most common phototherapy in use.
PUVA (Psoralen + UVA) Therapy
Combines a photosensitizing medication (psoralen) with UVA light.
Excimer Laser
Delivers focused high-intensity UVB light (308nm) to small, targeted areas of the skin, ideal for localized lesion such as lip / face vitiligo treatment, resistant psoriasis in the palms and soles etc,.
How is Phototherapy Done?
It’s a non-invasive procedure where the lesional skin is exposed to light from a specialised chamber. Each session lasts for a few minutes and 2-3 sessions per week will be required. Results are appreciable in around 8 weeks with long term improvement.
