Skin Growths Treatment

What are skin growths?

All of us experience certain skin outgrowths, pigment spots or bumps as we age.  They can be :

  • Skin tags
  • Milia
  • DPN’s and Seborrheic keratosis
  • Freckles and Moles

Why do skin growths occur?

  • Skin aging
  • Family history (genetic)
  • Photodamage from the sun’s UV radiation.
  • friction/ trauma- Milia
  • Associated insulin resistance / obesity (as in some cases of skin tags )

Skin Tags -Skin tags (acrochordons) are small, soft, flesh-colored growths that hang off the skin.

They are Common in areas with friction – neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, under breasts.

Milia – Milia are small, whitish yellow cysts that form when a skin protein called keratin gets trapped beneath the surface of the uppermost skin layer(epidermis). They are more commonly seen around the eyes and nose, or on areas of repeated friction or trauma.

DPN – Dermatosis papulosa nigra -seen as brown to black tiny bumps on face and neck. Seborrheic keratosis are larger black outgrowths on face and other body parts

Freckles & Moles- Freckles are flat  brown to black sun spots occurring commonly over the nose and cheeks. Both freckles and Moles increase in number with age and lack of use of adequate sun protection.

Apart from mild irritation with bigger lesions or cosmetic concerns, these skin growths are typically harmless and not related to our internal health. There are no over the counter medications(OTC) or home remedies that work on them. They are very easily dealt with at the clinic. However, the need to get rid of it is completely a personal choice.

What is the treatment for skin growths ?

We deal with these lesions with electrocautery. Electrocautery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a high-frequency electric current to target and remove these unwanted skin growths. The heat generated helps destroy tissue while sealing blood vessels, minimizing bleeding and reducing infection risk.

✔ Quick procedure  – We generally apply a numbing cream for 30-45 minutes, for the process to be painless and comfortable. The procedure in itself takes around 15 minutes depending on the number of lesions

✔ No bleeding & scarring. Minimal recovery time

✔ Immediate results with low recurrence risk.

✔ Safe & effective – Doesn’t have any long term impact on skin or internal health.

What not to do ?

There are many OTC or centres run by non medical personnel that use acids to remove these growths which usually result in either infection or large wounds resulting in scarring.
