What is a chemical peel? When I get a chemical peel / who can get a chemical peel? Is chemical peel safe treatment for skin of all ages?
Chemical peel is an in-clinic procedure done by a physician, commonly a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon. It’s a simple and an elegant procedure with predictable and gratifying results.
Many these days are allergic to the term “chemical’ and rather have an affinity towards the label “organic”. Though the above is often illogical and taken advantage of. The chemical used in these procedures are a handful, to name a few- glycolic, lactic, salicylic, mandelic, ascorbic etc ,. Most of these are very familiar for many as they are the ingredients used in most home care products often in lower concentrations.
What are the conditions where peels are used?
Pigmentation / marks from Acne, Melasma etc
Increased skin oiliness
Active acne (in some)
Superficial wrinkles
Rejuvenation of skin

The peel has multiple effects on the skin. To name a few, it exfoliates the superficial dead layers, increasing the skin turnover thereby decreasing pigmentation. Medium depth peels have effects on the dermis (the second layer) such as collagen remodelling and increasing hydration.
Is it a substitute for facials done in a parlour?
The steps involved in the procedure might look similar. For example, the peeling will involve thorough cleansing of the skin. We combine it with a superficial dermabrasion or a suction cleaning of the skin. Then the main step of peel application is done. The modern-day peels are sophisticated and very acceptable to the patient in all ways. The peel itself is comfortable on the skin and the post procedure results are manageable with simple post procedure care.
The experience of getting a facial done does give a feel-good factor and we feel fresh from scrubbing off of the superficial dull layers. The effects seem to last for a few days only as they do not affect the function of the skin. While Parlor facials suit many, it involves clean up with harsh instruments that can trigger acne, irritation and sometimes pigmentation on a long run. The products used may not be all hypoallergenic.

What do I do after the peel ?
Whatever the indication of the chemical peel, post procedure care is important. The peel is doing its changes on the skin, so protection from sunlight and pollution for the first few days after the peel is needed. A moist skin heals better than a dry skin. So, Sunscreen and moisturiser adequately used will be sufficient to make the peel work on the skin and recover smoothly. And remember no active products in this period.
Chemical peels offer a transformative solution for rejuvenating the skin, helping to reduce imperfections, improve texture, and reveal a glowing complexion. With the right treatment and care, they can be a powerful tool in your skincare routine.
